a cinematic pivot

Last night Laney and I went to see a movie, and we pivoted to a new choice all of about half an hour before the showtime of what had been our first choice—Hurry Up Tomorrow. But, only shortly before that, I had discovered on MetaCritic how insanely bad was the aggregate critics' score for it there: 30! Actually yesterday it was 29. It went up slightly!

The showtime we had planned was at 6:00. I had ridden my bike home, which turned out to be in very light sprinkling rain. It was fine, but by the time Laney and I were walking, we both needed umbrellas. Anyway, I had 15 minutes at home, and Shobhit had a delicious pani puri setup out on the kitchen counter for us to have as our dinner. I ate a bunch of them, and then left to go meet Laney at Broadway on Pine.

I told her about the bad reviews. I mentioned what other options there were if we wanted to change our minds. There was this movie, Friendship, at 6:30, and that one's MetaScore was quite respectable—72. We had seen the trailer to this movie several times, but had commented on how it had all these pull quotes from critics saying it was hilarious, and yet the movie itself looked more like a horror film.

But then, Laney and I decided to look up reviews, and it did not take long for us to decide to pivot. We went to this movie at 6:30 instead, taking some time to just hang out in the bar/lounge area on the second floor of the AMC at Picific Place for about half an hour before showtime.

And? The movie was great. It actually was hilarious. It also has a constant undercurrent of awkward menace, but both of us laughed a lot. We left the movie agreeing that we had made the right decision.

We chose to take the bus home. We waited like eight minutes at the Convention Center on Pike for the #10 to come by, which stops at Broadway and on 15th, so it took both of us basically right to our respective buildings (or in Laney's case, half a block away from it). I was home at about 9:00, giving me an hour to write and post my review before I went to bed.

Shobhit was gone when I got home, and I went to bed before he returned. I believe he had a Seattle Men in Leather event to go to.

He has a couple of things to do tomorrow too, when I, in a rare turn of events, have no plans at all. I have no plans tonight, no plans tomorrow—this is an unusually uneventful weekend coming up. I suppose it's just as well, with the rain in the forecast. Sunday may be better, and Laney and I have a Happy Hour scheduled that day. Where we will go exactly is a bit up in the air, as we were going to do a BYOB at Beaver Pond Natural Area in Northgate, but if it's rainy then we won't want to do that. I've emailed her with ideas.

If this weekend does prove to be as uneventful as it appears, it will be the last without any major events in many weeks. Granted, next weekend isn't a huge amount more evenful either, but I do have a double feature scheduled with Laney, to see 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later in preparation for the upcoming 28 Years Later next month.

But after that? I have the weekend on Fox Island with Gabriel & Friends May 30 - June 1; I'll be in Washington, D.C. with Shobhit June 4-10, the weekend of June 7 & 8 being World Pride; Shobhit's and my anniversary is on June 14 and Laney and I have another Happy Hour on the 15th; The Fremont Solstice Parade is on June 21 and then I have breakfast and a double feature (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) with Alexia on June 22; June 27-29 is all Pride Weekend events; the following weekend is the 4th of July although aside from fireworks I still have nothing specific scheduled that weekend, kind of amazingly. Still, that makes it the least-scheduled weekend in the next seven weeks.

This stupid cold I caught last week has really had a knack for lingering. The coughing, which never got all that bad anyway, was pretty much confined to last week, but through much of this week I have still been occasionally congested and needing to clear my throat and such, with this very vague feeling through my body that feels like a sort of very recognizable echo of that cold. Today, finally, I feel closer to "normal" than I have since probably Monday of last week. I'm so glad it never actually got very severe at all, but even longevity can be super annoying. I had thought I would go to Steamworks tonight, but this soon after having a cold, I've decided against it. I don't want to risk catching something else, even if it's a different cold virus, this close to the travels I have coming up. Besides, my second pair of jeans got rops in the crotch, so I have to buy at least one new pair. Removing Steamworks from the current budget helped mitigate that added expense.
