Sun, 8:37: Far-left people will hate hearing this but I’m already coming around on Joe Biden, who reveals more of his decency at every turn. He’d still never have been anywhere near *my* first choice, but I also understand politics is tactical: All those swing states he barely carried almost certainly would not have been won by any of the other Democratic candidates (and certainly not the ones I liked the most). It’s clearer to me as time goes on that Biden was the best choice if Democrats really wanted to win.
None of the right’s attempts to demonize him have really worked, which speaks to his integrity. His effectiveness as an actual president remains to be seen, obviously, but we can certainly all rest assured that, unlike his predecessor, his motives will not be characterized by petty vengeance and narcissism. By the same token, compared to the other primary candidates, Biden is best positioned to get incremental, lasting changes through Congress. (Without unrepentant obstructionists like Mitch McConnell in the way, anyway.)
Now, in all likelihood these barometers will shift slightly over the next four years, and towards the left, which is exactly what the right fears, and I get that. I also see no reason not to adopt the same attitude those same people have when the roles are reversed: Them’s the breaks. (This attitude is why Joe Biden is president-elect and I am not.)
It will also, perhaps, move the country toward greater readiness for a Kamala Harris presidency, which—the next four years depending—I will almost certainly be down for.
