doing a lot

I have too much going on today and not a lot of time for updating. I already did a good amount of writing anyway; you can read the review I wrote, as quickly as I could (and still exceeding 1,000 words), of the movie Till here. Very good, B+, hard to watch but not nearly as hard as it could have been or as one might have feared. It takes a respectable approach to a horrifically tragic story, focusing on the fallout of a violent event rather than on the event itself.

I had no time to write the review last night because my only option for seeing it after work yesterday was at the 7:30 showing at the AMC in the U District. The movie is 130 minutes long and with a minimum of 20 minutes of trailers beforehand, it was nearly 8:00 before it even started; it let out right around 10:00, when I like to be in bed already if I can help it. I took Light Rail back to Capitol Hill Station and walked the half mile home from there. I immediately brushed my teeth and undressed and just went to bed.

I barely saw Shobhit, because he left work early to attend an Expedia event, where he wound up getting food. I had thought I was frying chopped vegetables at his request, with focaccia bread sandwiches as a dinner idea, only to find out he wound up getting food elsewhere. So, I just cut some smaller slices of the bread for myself, toasted it, and put some of the fried onions and bell peppers on that. Along with veggie ham and some bleu cheese it was actually a delicious dinner.

With a bit of extra time before I needed to leave for the movie, I read for a while, the library book I will be finishing today in the unusually short time of two weeks—I typically take months to finish a book so this is significant. It's called The Submission and is about a blind contest to become the designer of a 9/11 memorial, after which the winner is revealed to be a Muslim man. I find the book compulsively readable and will be almost sad to finish it—but, just yesterday I finally got to pick up the new David Sedaris book so I am also excited to move on to that. I even have another novel already checked out and I may have to return it before I even have a chance to get to it. That's kind of a bummer, but it's also like 500 pages and I have my doubts I can get it read before I have to read the next book for Book Club. I'm only able to skip this month's selection because it's one I just read a few months ago; they're actually reading it at my recommendation!

Beyond that, I just had my biweekly FaceTime lunch with Karen, part of what's got me more occupied than usual today—I was actually supposed to have a 1:1 directly after, at 1:00 with Eric, already postponed from yesterday, but with both of our workloads we agreed in the end just to cancel for this week. Still, I have only two more hours of work today before Kathy R's retirement party happens at 3:00. She's been here more than forty years and I am eager to find out whether or not she exceeded Randy's record of 42 years. I suspect she didn't, but I want to know for sure!

Anyway. A lot of my call with Karen covered both the cow shit burning on Shobhit's mom's kitchen counter for Diwali—plus discussions of possible local Diwali events we can maybe coordinate attending next year—and then the Ghazipur landfill, or as Shobhit had put it, "garbage mountain." Karen has been to Delhi only twice in her life and apparently the most recent time was in 2007, so she was unaware of this issue specific to Delhi—in fact, she only learned from me today that Delhi is now the largest city in India.

We also talked about some recent frustrations at her job, so we had plenty to talk about, and the time nearly ran away from us until right at 1:00 she said she needed to get back to tending to work needs. As do I! So I better post this and get to it.
