re-tire-ment

My evening last night was a little hectic for a bit, right after I got home from work.

Shobhit discovered his tire was flat and so he took the bus to work. He called AAA while on the bus on his way home, and in a somewhat stunning turn of events, there was a AAA truck in the area and he was at our condo almost immediately. He must have had a lot to do though because he sure got in and out quickly: I was gone before I could even ask, at Shobhit's suggestion, whether we could have any charge for his changing the tire. I guess not. He barely said a couple of words to me the whole time he was there, although "the whole time" makes it sound like he was there any longer than, say, ten minutes.

The bigger issue was all the shit we had in the trunk of the car. Like, holy shit. There must have been forty tote bags back there. And a first aid kit, and the window protector thing, and a box of spare parts of some kind I don’t even know what the hell it is, and a gasoline canister, a tire iron, a spare umbrella I had completely forgotten about, and four blanket totes. Do we really need that many blanket totes in the trunk? I took two of them upstairs, along with an insulated tote that would better be used for picnic packing, although we already have like three others of those too.

Anyway. The last time I did a picnic Happy Hour with Laney I was disappointed to be unable to take a blanket tote, because Shobhit was at work and they were all in the car.

I don't think I even listed everything. The AAA guy had the flat tire off before I was even done pulling all the shit out of the trunk, to get it out of the way of the spare tire. I helped him lift the cover off the spare tire, and he inflated that briefly and then put it on the front-right wheel. I suppose Shobhit needs to take the car to a repair shop now.

On the upside for my end, I did a much needed reorganization of the trunk. Most of that stuff is neatly laid out in the backseat now, as there's no point putting it all back in the trunk until the spare is back in there again. At first I was organizing it all in piles on top of the car: this we want to keep and take upstairs; this we want to keep in the car; this we want to throw away. I took at the very least 16 totes to the garbage. There is no doubt there's still more than that still left in the car, but, oh well. I found several totes we never use but which are incredibly sturdy and we probably should start using, when we go shopping. I left the umbrella in the car too. I like the idea of a spare umbrella in the car.

The downside was that I totally ripped the end of one of my finger nails off in this process, which necessitated cutting the rest of them down yet again, just to even them out a bit.

Once Shobhit got home, at his request I had maggi noodles reheated for him, and a bagel toasted, and hot toddies made for us for drinks. I had considered watching Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers on Disney+ while waiting for him, but then the AAA guy came sooner than expected. I decided Shobhit would just watch the movie with me while we ate dinner, so I had it queued up as soon as he got home.

It was all right. Not as great as some would apparently want me to believe. I went back and forth regarding whether to review it, but when I realized I did have plenty to say about it, I went ahead and posted a review this morning. I gave it a B-.

Well, I was supposed to have taken transit down to the Columbia City store to attend Laurie's going-away party; today is her last day after 36 years at PCC. I left the office at 10:20 this morning, intending to catch a bus at 10:27, toward the Westlake Light Rail Station downtown, only to have OneBusAway tell me that bus had come and gone five minutes early. What the fuck? No matter; it was best for me to get to this party with it already underway anyway. I walked over to the next stop on Denny, wound up on a #33 bus, and was on Light Rail in time to arrive at the store by about 11:10.

—Only to be told the party had been pushed back an hour. Shit! I had already asked Eric to push a virtual meeting he suggested for 12:30 back an hour because I was planning to come to this 11 a.m. gathering. I was directed upstairs where Laurie would be, and to be fair, she was delighted that I came regardless. I sure wanted some of the cake that would inevitably be served at the party, but by 11:50 Laurie said she needed to get some work done, so I went and sat out in the park in front of the store to kill some time.

I came back to the PCC Cooks classroom where the party would be, walking back into the store at about 12:05. Still nothing. I went outside and waited another five minutes. Came back in: still nothing. Why did these dipshits invite the co-op to a party that didn't seem to be happening? I wasn't that annoyed, to be honest; just a little disappointed. I probably would have seen some other people I would have enjoyed seeing, but I had a meeting to get back to, not to mention not having had lunch yet.

I went to find her, hanging tags in the Beer & Wine Department at about 12:10, saying I had to get going. She apologized but also thanked me again for coming, and gave me the second big hug of my visit. She told me, "Yeah, my husband is here, and my neighbor, but I'm not in charge of the party." She slightly shrugged. Oh, well. I'm still glad I went to see her off, even if it meant losing about two hours' worth of work. Transferring on transit can be a real pain in the ass when things don't line up properly with scheduling, and I wasn't back in the office until about 1:05. I never did get my cake, but I have plenty of treats here at the office.

Now I've got ten minutes before that meeting is to start. I'd better post this and get on with it.
