lame target

Last night was our Action Movie Night at the Braeburn Condos. It was Chris B's turn to pick the movie, and although the rest of the group seemed to enjoy it—and Shobhit thought it was really funny—I'd say it was one of the more lame of the movies we've ever watched with them. It was the 2010 film Wild Target, and actors in it (Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Rupert Grint) were an undeniably pleasant hang, but, the script made absolutely no sense, and I had a hard time getting past that.

As soon as I saw the title, which I had actually never heard of, I immediately looked up its score on MetaCritic: 41. Not great. The rest of the group would probably disagree with me but I'd call that score totally fair.

As always, though, it was also a pleasant hang with the group. It was kind of middle-sized this week, comparatively: eight people present. Tony, Jake, Ben, Chris B, Chris G, Ryan, Shobhit and myself.

Shobhit and I had an easy thing to prepare and bring: veggie spring rolls from Costco. All I had to do was heat them in the oven for half an hour. This is probably the third time we've brought those, and this time around they were kind of surprisingly popular.

I ate too much. The amount of spring rolls I ate would have been fine, but, Chris G brought pizza, and he's one guy who always makes a pizza he brings vegetarian so Shobhit and I can eat it. He got an artichoke pizza from Mad Pizza, and I was almost shocked by how good it was. The next time Alexia wants to order pizza I should see if she'd want to order from there.

I walked home from work yesterday, before getting to the baking of spring rolls at home. The last few days it's been drizzly in the morning and dry after work, which prevents me from biking to work (when it's really also been too cold in the mornings again anyway) but allows me to read my library book while walking home. And I'm really loving it: Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears by Michael Schulman.

I'm in the third chapter right now, about the 1951 Best Actress race between Gloria Swanson for Sunset Boulevard (my favorite black-and-white movie); Bette Davis for All About Eve; and Judy Holliday for Born Yesterday (which I'm not sure I've even heard of—funny because she's the one who won). I had to text Laney yesterday wth the suggestion that we do a double feature of Sunset Boulevard and All About Eve both of which skewer Hollywood in ways no movies before them ever really did, and both of which are about aging actresses and starring legends beyond their prime.

I've seen Sunset Boulevard several times but have only seen All About Eve once or twice, and I really can't remember it. I'm really looking forward to watching them back to back, and am having a fantastic time reading about the backstories of their Oscar campaigns. This book is practically written just for me. I'm loving it.
