back to the desert planet

I guess it's safe to say that last night I went to the movie event of the spring, and honestly eventually possibly still the movie event of the year: Dune Part Two. For a good portion of it, well into its second half, I really liked it but was slightly mixed on the already-spreading idea that it is cinematic "perfection." And then it all came together in the end and I really loved it.

That was viewing #1 out of three I have long had planned before even seeing it. I saw it last night with Tracy. I'm seeing it on Sunday with Alexia. On Tuesday, March 12, I will see it with Laney and Shobhit. Both Sunday and the 12th will be at SIFF Cinema Downtown (formerly Cinerama). As that is not AMC, I have to pay for those individual tickets. I couldn't justify doing that three times when I have a monthly AMC Plus A-List membership, for last night I used that to watch it at Pacific Place.

Tracy bought the famous sandworm popcorn bucket. On Tuesday, I texted her this:

I was starting to think about buying one of those Dune popcorn buckets just for fun. I just looked up the price: $24.99—sooo never mind

She laughed at that, and then responded:

Haha I might and you can take pics

I replied:

lol ... that was all I wanted it for!

Sometimes I marvel at the amount of money some of my friends will pay for ultimately pointless shit. On the other hand, maybe I shouldn't judge. For all I know, if Marie Kondo asked Tracy if the sandworm popcorn bucket "sparks joy," Tracy would say "Yes!" So, more power to her then. I would only have ever gotten it for the photos. What am I going to ever use it for otherwise, except maybe a future Dune double feature?

Well, anyway. The showtime was at 4:15. The movie is two hours and 46 minutes long, and last night at least, the next showing was too late. I left work at 3:40 so I could walk there, and Tracy arrived just before the showtime. She evidently decided she would indeed get the sandworm popcorn bucket, and we really lucked out with that one: the young lady at concessions said they sold out of their initial stock weeks ago, like within an hour. When we were there yesterday, they literally had only one of them left, sitting there by itself in the compartment under the glass counter where they ususally put their popped popcorn.

We both really enjoyed it. I can't say I went nuts over it, the way I sometimes do over other movies I really love. But, given I gain a greater appreciatio for the 2021 Dune every single time I watch it again, I fully expect the same to happen with Dune Part Two. I even rather like the cadence of when I'll be seeing it the next two times: Sunday will be only three days after seeing it the first time, when it mostly kind of just washed over me. Then I'll have over a week to let it settle and sink in my mind, before I see it the third time on the 12th.

I constantly sort of forget that, any time I see a movie with Tracy, she drives me home, and then we wind up chatting for a long time in her car parked across the street from my building. I kept thinking I would be walking home from the theater like I usually do. But of course, I didn't. I got a ride that last mile home.

We talked about a pretty wide variety of stuff. I can't say we spent a huge amount of time catching up on each other's lives, even though I haven't actually seen Tracy since we went to see Poor Things on January 16—six weeks ago. We talked a lot about this movie, and some other movies, and movie stars, and a bit about the Madonna concert. This came up when Tracy mentioned plastic surgery. She's constantly saying this or that actor has had plastic surgery. (According to her, Anya Taylor-Joy has had work done. Really? Sometimes I get skeptical of these claims, only because Tracy says it about so many people.)

I might have chatted longer, but I was really hungry so I had to go up to the condo and make myself dinner. I left the last of the spaghetti for Shobhit and I just had two veggie corn dogs. This worked out well for me, I weighed in just under 160 lbs this morning for the first time in months. Anyway, I then spent the next hour or so writing my review, doing unusually well at having lots to say without even minor spoilers. I was just finishing up when Shobhit got home from work. After that it was time for bed.

In other news, today is Shanti and Guru's 16th birthday. This makes them really quite old, for cats—and the longest any cat I've ever had has ever lasted, actually, by a solid year (Batty was 15 when I had to put him down). Maybe I should knock on wood or something, but aside from the vomiting issue that's been going on for years, they don't seem any different than they have for most of their adult lives. Well, okay, Shanti does have a couple of weird bumps on her head now, which the vet last year said were normal with older cats and seemed to regard them as harmless. So there's that.

I looked it up, and in cat years, they are 80. In terms of averaged, they don't have a lot of time left. But, in terms of possibility, they could be around another three or four years, if not more. Probably not, but it could happen. I do think that thinking about this too hard makes Shobhit a little anxious.
