all this for two hours of boredom

Laney has a slight cold, it seems. She texted me yesterday she was congested and sneezing, and with a funeral she's planning to sing at with a group on Sunday, she quite understandably wants to avoid the risk of making it worse between now and then. So, she canceled joining me for the Kelly Reichardt movie The Mastermind last night.

Turns out she got the better end of the deal. For all I know, she may still have liked it. I, on the other hand, was so fucking bored I could hardly stand it. I really did not enjoy it.

The earliest showing last night was at 7:00, which was rather inconvenient, but it was when both Laney and I had availability when we booked the tickets. I went home first, and when I told Shobhit it was about an art heist, he immediately said, "That sounds boring." I said, "You think everything sounds boring if there are no naked men in it." I still stand by that. He had no good reason to assume it was boring based on that description alone.

Unfortunately, in the end he was proved right. When I got home he asked how the movie was, and I chuckled and said, "It was really boring." He replied, "I told you not to go!"

Well, it gave me a movie to complain about in a review, I guess. Except that it was nearly 10:00 when I got home, so I did something I very rarely do anymore and I wrote and review after I got to work this morning. I'm seeing another movie this afternoon and yet another tomorrow—the latter with Laney, who says she's feeling a little better so she feels good about tomorrow. I listened to a podcast today that kind of ripped that movie apart so my expectations for that one are now also in the toilet. I think I'll wait to mention that to Laney, though. She's looking forward to Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere because she likes Bruce Springsteen.

I took my library copy of Chapterhouse: Dune back to the Central Library yesterday, because it was 14 days overdue, and there are 7 holds on the 7 copies they own so I could not renew it. There are 2 holds on their eBook copy so, even though I did place a hold that way, there's no telling how long it would take for it to become available. I just bit the bullet and bought the $9.99 ebook from Amazon to read on my Kindle app, as I'm only 40% of the way through the book. I had a random credit of, like, a dollar though, so I got the pleasant surprise of it only costing me $9.92 even after taxes.

This did mean I was already over by Madison St, though, so once I dropped my book off in the box, I caught a RapidRide G bus home from there. I knew I'd be walking back downtown and back home again later for the movie anyway. Shobhit and I had time to watch all but the last five minutes of this week's episode of The Lowdown before he needed to start a Zoom rehearsal at 6:00. We watched the last 5 minutes after I got home from the movie. So, that basically accounts for the entire evening.

In other news, Grant really got the ball rolling yesterday regarding our holiday "Foraged Feast" for this year. The inital suggestion had been December 10; I noted in the detailed email I sent to him and Lexis yesterday that Merchandising already has a holiday outing Wednesday December 17, only a week after that; and I would love to get back to having this event before Thanksgiving rather than after. On the other hand, I have to acknowledge the limitations of this smaller space and the idea of having separate all-office events in both November and December the way we used to.

Still, the first calendar invite sent out yesterday had it schedule for November 12! I was delighted, and even responded that I was pleasantly surprised.

Grant clearly felt bad when he had to reschedule shortly after that—he found out the Q4 Board Meeting was on November 12 and clearly we'd want our CEO to be able to join us rather than having to go to that instead on the same day. I think we could have made November 19 work, but people seem to want to avoid doing this the week before Thanksgiving these days, even though it was done many years in the early days. This pushed it to the week after Thanksgiving.

And then? Grant found out another department had a conflict with December 3. Back it went to December 10, the date originally proposed. Grant even came to me to express how badly he felt about this, which was sweet but not really necessary. He did have to send three separate updates to the calendar invite, though—the first was just to remove the Teams meeting link that had originally been included. The second updated the date to December 3, and the third updated it to December 10.

As I said to him, I'm just delighted the event is still happening at all. I'll take what I can get!

Then, just because I felt like it, I went to my Google Calendar, created a specific calendar for "Holiday Events," color coordinated that with a brown color, and reassigned all my holiday-related events on the calendar between now and January 1. Between Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, I have 25 events on that calendar currently.
