The Weekend Wash

I'm actually at home as I write this, but I'm still treating it like a regular Daily Lunch Update (DLU) because I'm still posting it relatively close to lunch time, and I'm still taking this time to tell you about my weekend. Well, thus far anyway: I am taking today off to burn through PTO. I had plans with Laney today, but when I noted the movie we were going to see today is not playing at AMC, she asked to cancel both that and our plan to go for coffee / hot chocolate at The French Guys this afternoon because she had too much going on and wanted to free up a weekday. I was a little bummed by that, I won't lie, but it's also not that big a deal—we still see each other every few days at most. I just saw her on Saturday and I'll see her again on Thursday.

In fact, Laney and I did two things on Saturday: first, we went to see Die My Love at Pacific Place downtown. We both thought it was . . . fine. Shobhit and I actually went for a roughly one-hour walk right before that, which included going to QFC so he could buy his usual lottery ticket, and then we also stopped at The Reef Cannabis Dispensary on E Olive & E Denny Way, because he wanted to buy a gummy for an event he went to Saturday night. We then walked together to Laney's apartment building just in time to meet her at the time she and I had agreed, and we all walked downtown together, although Shobhit did not join us for the movie. He was just getting his steps in (plus he'd never have had much interest in that movie anyway).

After the movie, though, Laney and I walked to our weekend Happy Hour for the month: a new-ish place called The Wash, a Southwestern-themed bar with fun colors in interior design—lots of red—in the space where Bleu Bistro's Grotto used to be, just one block west of Broadway on Olive Way.

Their Happy Hour menu is fairly limited, particularly in terms of food, as they just serve sandwiches, only one of which is vegetarian—but, I ordered that and it was fucking delicious. It was called "The Fool" and has cream cheese, pesto, Swiss cheese, cucumber, red onion, spinach and lettuce. Happy Hour cocktails are $11 when regular price is $16, at least for House Cocktails; I had the "Pearl Heart" and it was also delicious, made with silver tequila, cointreau, prickly pear & lime. I budgeted $45 for this Happy Hour and when I noted that I would go over budget if I hot a second drink, Laney noted that Happy Hour well drinks are only $6, so then I just got an orange juice & tequila. And I think they must have fairly generous pours, because I was a bit buzzed by the end. And I really went out of my way to drink at least two full glasses of water and take two Aleve before I went to bed that night.

Before that point in the evening, though, Laney and I walked to our respective homes, and then I wrote my movie review. I have no idea why but I really zonked out early on Saturday night, and I believe I was sound asleep by 10 p.m. I don't even know what time Shobhit got home.

I guess I'll back up a little and tell you briefly about Friday evening: Shobhit had rehearsal to go to, and I took the opportunity to go to Steamworks, for the first time since August. I had a relatively good time, though it took a couple of hours, predictably, for any action to take place. I also had to renew my six-month membership, so that plus the room I rented came to $62—and only that because I got there before 6:00. Shobhit tried to convince me to go on Saturday since he was going to his own event that night, but it would have cost me more on the weekend, even before 6:00; $77 at least. And I would not even likely have made it there before 6:00, as I'd have been cutting it too close after Happy Hour with Laney. And after 6:00 on Saturday, the room plus membership renewal would have come to $92. And that would be nutso bonkers; the $62 I spent on Friday was spreading things thin enough as it was. At least the next time I go, with the membership taken care of, a weekday before 6:00 will cost me only $32 for a Standard Room.

I'd probably spend a lot less money than this if I just found guys to hook up with at bars. But, I just don't have the social skills for that, nor do I want to deal with the social expectations that just don't exist at a bathhouse.

Yesterday was the more low-key day of the weekend. I took myself to see Predator: Badlands, which was a wildly different kind of movie, but also was . . . fine.

Before that, though, Shobhit again walked with me. We left a bit early, and I walked with him as far as Pike Place Market. It was a spectacularly sunny day yesterday (partly cloudy, but for Seattle, this was like a summer day in November), and so warm that I took off the hoodie I wore—the high was 60° yesterday. Shobhit, still wanting to add steps, tried to get me to walk over to Pike first and come back, which would add three blocks of length to my route back to the theater. He turned up 4th Avenue and I was like, "You go ahead!" I just kept going straight down Pine to Pike Place, where I then walked out onto the MarketFrot area briefly to get a few shots of the view of Elliott Bay on a beautiful day. When I walked back out of the Market on Pike Place, Shobhit was just arriving, but I was not headed back to the theater. So we kissed and went our separate ways, Shobhit off on another really long walk.

I did pop into Beecher's for some sample cheese.

After the movie, I walked the rest of the way back home, and wrote my review. After that Shobhit and I spent the rest of the day watching TV. We watched the second half of the four-episode miniseries Death by Lightning on Netflix, about the assassination of President James Garfield which turned out to be quite excellent. Then, somewhat randomly, Shobhit decided to watch Materialists, which I had seen already and loved and which Shobhit had not seen. Shobhit spent a lot of time on his computer, kind of annoying me with his lack of attention the very way Ivan always had whenever he lived here and watched anything with me. He gave no opinion of the movie when it was over. I still think it's great. I even told Shobhit before we started it, "A lot of people hated it, but I really liked it a lot." My opinion remain unchanged after watching it again.

Then, we watched this week's episode of the new HBO series I Love L.A., and then this week's episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The main topic was "Felony Murder," a bullshit concept that is pretty scary stuff.

Now, I'm just waiting to hear from Danielle as to when she'll come up; I texted her and she turned out to be interested in going to The French Guys with me. I didn't tell her she was my second choice. I did tell her I'd be willing to drive down to Renton if she wanted, but she said she didn't mind coming into town, so I've moved the car to street parking so she can park in our spot in our garage. That exchange was Saturday night, though; I followed up an hour ago and haven't heard back. I'm sure I will though. I have the whole day!
