my last two outings

Laney and I went to a movie last night, and it was . . . kind of terrible. It was called Things Like This, a completely meaningless title for a movie I gave a solid C.

I'm glad I didn't look up the score on MetaCritic until now, as I was afraid it would influence my take on the film too much. The user reviews on Letterboxd are all over the place, the most popular rating there being two out of five stars—exactly what I gave it.

Oh. And guess what? Even though it opened last Friday, this movie still has no score on MetaCritic. I guess critics aren't even bothering to watch this one. Weird. It has three reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, two "fresh" and one "rotten," but still too few to get a score.

I won't say the movie had no redeeming qualities. It had a few—hence the solid C, rather than something lower. This seems to match the general consensus on Letterboxd, although there were also a few people who really loved it. The spread among different ratings was much more even across than with most movies. But, as I said, more two-star ratings than any other. Second most was one-star ratings, but third-most was five-star.

Anyway. I rode my bike to work yesterday, and since the movie showtime was at 6:20, I rode home first. I had 45 minutes to eat dinner, and Shobhit had pasta ready and made. It was even more delicious than usual. He did a very good job. It was even better with parmesan on top. Shobhit noted he had already added cheese to it, but I stand my argument against that: adding cheese to the pasta sauce is pointless. It blends in and you can't taste the cheese element, which makes the added fat there for no reason. At least with the parmesan I could taste the cheese.

The rest of the pasta was still delicious though. The pasta was good on its own merits! I just didn't think it needed cheese added to the sauce while being cooked.

I met Laney on Pine and Broadway and, as usual, we walked the rest of the way downtown together. We took the bus back after the movie, this time on the #12, which still takes us both to our respective stops. I spent the next roughly one hour writing my review, feeling kind of bad about shitting on a movie that must have meant a lot to the people who made it. This is a bit different from tearing apart a major studio production, after all. But as I later mentioned to Laney, if it's bad, it's bad. What are you gonna do?

I guess I'll also mention, real quick, that I just got back from lunch with Cathryn. It was supposed to be a "Power User Lunch" with her and Amanda, they being the other two "power users" of HQ, the item cost and price maintenance system we use, but Amanda had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict. We rescheduled that for Thursday, June 12. I told Cathryn I was still up for going to lunch though, and so we did.

We went to Moto Pizza, which is like a block away. It's also up a hill to Western Avenue so we take a kind of complex route, down to the third floor, across the skybridge to the garage in the building across the street, up an elevator and out through that building's lobby. Anyway it was a lovely luch and a lovely visit. I think this is only the second time Cathryn and I have gone to lunch just the two of us, and she makes great company and great conversation. I also learned today she turns 59 on Friday.

Anyway, this is why I'm posting later than usual. I had the weekly Office Relocation Team meeting between noon and 1:00 and then Cathryn and I were off. But now I need to get back to work!
