Yesterday I left work half an hour early, so I could meet up with Laney for the Thursday Happy Hour Pinoyshki Bakery does between 2:00 and 5:00.
Laney and I noticed the Happy Hour sign inside the bakery while we were walking past on Pine Street months ago, and so we added it to our Happy Hour schedule—for a date months later, because that's just where we are with our Happy Hour planning. We just finally got around to it.
And here's the dichotomy with this place: the food and drink were delicious. The "Happy Hour" was a legit disappointment. I didn't even realize until I calculated at home later that the only discount I got overall was $1.05. I had a "Vegan Seattle Dog" and a glass of wine, and with tax and tip that came to $29.30. Some Happy Hour.
There were two particularly annoying things about this. First, the "discount" itself. You get one of their piroshkys for $7.55 if you buy a drink at regular price. I ordered a glass of wine, having no idea it would be a shopping $15. Laney noted it was
a generous pour, which was true, but I'm still not sure it was worth $15, delicious as it was. Second, they didn't even have their Happy Hour menu posted anywhere yesterday, which made it be pretty difficult to gauge what I wanted and for how much.
I asked the cashier to be more specific about what the options were, and he went to the register to look some stuff up. Laney started talking to him too, and I totally clocked him side-glancing at me and shaking his head as though annoyed with me, before he asked
me to "be more specific" about what I wanted. I could tell he was busy, but Jesus Christ. How the hell can I be specific if you don't have complete information on any of your posted menus?
I was pretty taken aback by the total of $29.30 even after I saw the word "deal" popping up on the screen by the register. I decided not to make a big deal out of it and I just wouldn't order any more there. And I will still say, to their credit, that the Vegan Seattle Dog was great, as was the wine. It's just the whole idea of a "Happy Hour" there was a complete joke, and the customer service left a bit to be desired. We sat down and I said, "Well, we can scratch this place off our list."
Still, I remained annoyed enough by the whole thing that later in the evening after I got home, I wrote and posted a
Yelp Review, three stars even though most of the reviews are 5. I might have felt differently had I gone at a different time with no expectations regarding a Happy Hour, but as I argued in that review, if that's the scenario more likely to be satisfactory, they should scrap their so-called "Happy Hour" altogether.

Laney had some extra cash yesterday due to her budgeting and timing, and she offered to buy me a cheap drink at Saint John's if I wanted to go over there with her for a second drink. I accepted. We walked through the pedestrian path through the middle of the block from Pinoyshki, and that was where we found the
large metal circles we posed inside of for a couple more pictures.
Saint John's had Happy Hour going on too, in this case until 6:00, an hour later than the chitnzy Happy Hour at Pinoyshki. Saint John's rotates their Happy Hour cocktails, and yesterday they had a $10 Watermelon Margarita, and that's what I ordered. I have had few cocktails that were better. It was fucking delicious.
We sat at a two-person table tightly nestled in a nook area between the side window by the front door and the east wall of the place, also next to a window overlooking the sidewalk outside. It was very cozy. Laney and I chatted a lot about certain things going on with family members, or one in particular.
I walked her back to her apartment building from there, and she walked me half the way from there to Broadway. Then I walked home, where I found Shobhit near the end of of a two-hour SAG-AFTRA Local board meeting via Zoom, which was followed be a different but I think related meeting that lasted another hour. So he was pretty occupied all evening. We watched this week's episode of
Peacemaker on HBO Max after that, and after that it was pretty close to time for bed.
