walking and watching and thinking ahead

We had a pretty quiet evening at home last night, possibly the only such evening I'll have all week, but it began with Shobhit meeting me at work after one of his long walks to get his steps in, and then he walked with me the rest of the way home.

Once we got home, I only went outside again to take the recycling out. I probably should have changed into my pajama pants. Shobhit changed into his bathrobe. And we binged season 2 of Hijack pretty much all evening: we watched episodes 2 through 6. I agree with the consensus that season 2 is not as good as season 1, but not that it's bad. The more it goes on, the more into it we seem to get. But it seems weird to me that both seasons have the exact same critical consensus score on MetaCritic (65/100), but the user reviews are far lower in both cases (5.5/10 for season 1; 3.9/10 for season 2), which to me is bonkers. It's an insubstantial but entertaining show, what more do you want? It's working for me, in any case.

I made chai as soon as we got home. Shobhit made beans and rice for dinner; we're actually probably down to the last quarter or so of the 14 lbs of beans I took from Alexia after she gathered them from her late aunt's house back in January. Honestly we're burning through those beans faster than I expected. Shobhit mixed all the black beans together and they're in a large plastic jar in our pantry cupboard.

I've been thinking about our trip to Amsterdam, as I am wont to do. I need to do some more research regarding things to do in Whistler in June; maybe even Lummi Island with Gabriel in May; I've basically done everything needed for planning my Birth Week next month—including the monkey wrench of Barbara's friend Becky contacting me about visiting from Spokane while Barbara is here. She seems eager to take us all out to dinner or something, so I had to adjust a bit of scheduling I had already done. But that's not a problem. No, I swear! Becky is clearly dying to see Barbara, and Barbara told me over text that she'd love to see her, and apparently they haven't seen each other face to face in about 15 years. So I guess I can share my Birth Week with that.

Anyway, the Amsterdam trip is such a huge undertaking that I spend more time on that. I have days marked on my calendar for when I can book certain things that must be reserved in advance—the earliest I can book the Anne Frank House, for example, will be at like 1 a.m. in my time zone while Shobhit and I are in Whistler, so that may be a little tricky. But I'll be ready!

I did look a little more closely at the hotels we'll be staying at in Amsterdam yesterday afternoon, specifically to see if there are laundry facilities, given that we were surprised one of our hotel rooms had a washer dryer in Sydney back in 2023. And I am happy to report that the first of our two hotels in Amsterdam does have laundry—based on Hotels.com reviews, it sounds like larger rooms have them in-unit and probably smaller rooms (which is what we booked) merely have access to shared laundry, but still free. Either way, this indicates to us that we do not need to pack a solid two weeks' worth of clothes, and perhaps just one week at most; it helps that we are booked for 8 nights at that first hotel. Presumably we can wash a week's worth of clothes our last day there, and then only need 9 days' worth of clothes to last us the rest of the trip. It also helps that, unlike Australia when we leave during our winter and then it's summer there so we needed clothes appropriate for both, in this case it'll be summer in both places so, for instance, we won't need any heavy jackets or heavy shoes or stuff like that.
