tolerable chilliness

Well, I guess I spoke too soon on Monday: I did ride my bike to work again today. It was dry, cloudy, and 49°. I did once again zip up my jacked to my chin, and wear my fingerless gloves. It was fine, but I have a feeling this still won't last long. Rain or not, it's only going to get colder over time. Although I'm looking at the 10-day forecast now, and right now there's no rain in the Seattle forecast, and no lows lower than 51°; evidently I'll be able to ride to work tomorrow this week as well as both Thursday and Friday next week—these being the only days through the next week that I will be working, in the middle of which is our trip to Albuquerque (with a buffer PTO day on Wednesday).

Anyway, it did rain yesterday, so it was very much the right decision to walk to work rather than ride yesterday. Granted, it was a scenario with barely-detectable moisture in the air while I walked to work in the morning, and then it was totally dry while I walked home after the movie I went to see. But, walking the four blocks over to Pacific Place after work, it was very rainy—not a downpour per se, but the kind of "light rain" that was thick enough that had I ridden my bike through it, even for four blocks, I would have gotten soaked. There was a surprising lot of traffic going through downtown, too. I was very happy to have my umbrella with me, even if I only needed it for those four blocks the entire day.

I did just spend my lunch break up on the Rainier Squre Lower Terrace, because I saw on my Weather app that it was 58° and sunny. Well, it had been long enough since I sat on the chairs at the far south end of the Lower Terrace that the sun no longer reached the chairs, now covered by shadows from surrounding buildings. I got so chilly sitting out there, even with my jacket on, that I went back into the lobby to spend the final third or so of my half-hour break.

The movie I took myself to was Forgotten Island, a Dreamworks Animation feature very steeped in Filipino folklore. It was fine, and could have been a lot better but for a few writing missteps and being far too busy.

I read my ebook copy of Madonna: A Rebel Life on my phone while I walked home after the movie, since I didn't have to worry about rain getting on it. This would have been shortly before 7:00, and it was already mid-dusk—notably darker than I tend to expect, but I sort of keep forgetting how much past the autumn equinox we already are. One more month and we'll be back on Standard Time, and we'll be back to it being basically dark before I get home from work. Which is totally fine!

I do find myself enjoying summer way more than I used to. Maybe it's just because this past summer was so mild, no major heat waves, feeling like the standard summers of years past. Not something I can get used to. Worse summers are coming. And even the harder rainfalls we get don't do us as much good as many may assume because the winters aren't as cold on average either, and we don't get the snowpack we need, and so draughts persist. Cue the This is fine" meme of a dog in a house on fire.

My approach remains: have as good a time as I can for as long as I can. So far, so good! Shobhit and I are nearing completion of the Sunflowers puzzle from the Van Gogh Museum gift shop, our fourth puzzle this year. It all started with that 3D Seattle puzzle I busted out for Barbara's visit during my Birth Week, and Shobhit got surprisingly really into it—Tracy bought me a puzzle for my birthday; Shobhit bought a puzzle at Powell's during a weekend trip to Portland; I bought the Sunflowers one in Amsterdam. We're going to need more! But, they have to be really cool. No boring picture puzzles!

I figured out that although each episode of Slow Horses officially releases on Wednesdays, that means midnight Eastern Time, so we were able to watch episode 3 of the current season at 9:00 last night before I then washed the dishes and headed to bed.
